This easy bang bang shrimp tacos recipe is a fun fusion meal with cilantro lime slaw, garlic shrimp, and creamy bang bang sauce; try it for lunch or dinner.
If you enjoy fusion food, this bang bang shrimp taco recipe is a great one to try at home. This fun and tasty combo of Mexican and Thai flavors are a real hit in our house. We are big fans of both Mexican and Thai cuisines. It’s so easy to make these into a fusion meal because they have so many flavors in common: garlic, lime and cilantro, for example. The bang bang sauce, which gives these tacos a very unique flavor, is made from sweet chili sauce. And, it’s super easy to make at home. To reduce the carbs found in other bang bang shrimp recipes, I use oven roasted shrimp instead of breaded shrimp, which adds even more flavor to the meal.
Make a Garlic Marinade for the Shrimp
The first step in this bang bang shrimp tacos recipe, is making a quick marinade for the shrimp. First, add crushed or minced garlic to a zip top bag with olive oil and salt. Then, add cleaned shrimp to the bag. Remove all the air, and close the bag. Finally, make sure all the shrimp are covered in the garlic oil, and let them marinate for at least thirty minutes.
Make a Quick Cilantro Lime Coleslaw
The next step in this easy recipe is to make an easy cilantro lime coleslaw. It adds a lot of flavor and crunch to your tacos. I actually made a separate post just for this slaw because it’s one of our favorites, and we serve it with most of our tacos. You can check out my post here, or here’s a quick version. First, finely shred up some cabbage. I like green and purple for more color, but it doesn’t really matter. Then, mince up fresh cilantro until it’s very fine. Put the cabbage and cilantro in a mixing bowl. Next, add the juice and zest of a lime along with some mayonnaise and salt. Mix it all together and let the flavors meld in the refrigerator while you finish off the meal.
You can make your coleslaw using a prepackaged bag, but it’s also really easy to make your own at home. Here’s a quick video showing you how to shred cabbage by hand with a knife.
Easy Homemade Bang Bang Sauce
The distinctly Thai flavor in these fusion tacos comes from the creamy bang bang sauce. You’re going to need some sweet chili sauce, which is a classic Thai condiment. If you’ve never bought it before, you can usually find it in the Asian aisle at the grocery store. For this bang bang sauce, whisk together sweet chili sauce and mayonnaise. When mixed with the mayonnaise, there is very little spice from the chilis, while being full of flavor. This is the perfect amount for my kids. If you like your tacos spicier, you can add more sweet chili to your bang bang sauce. The other option is to add extra sweet chili sauce to your tacos.
Roast the Shrimp in the Oven & Dice up Toppings
After the shrimp have marinated for at least 30 minutes, they are ready to roast in the oven. First, pre-heat your oven to 400°. Then, spread out the marinated shrimp in an even layer on a baking sheet. Roast the shrimp for about ten minutes until they are pink and opaque. While the shrimp are cooking, dice up a medium tomato and half of an avocado.
Layer the Bang Bang Shrimp Tacos and Enjoy
When the shrimp are finished cooking, it’s time to build your bang bang shrimp tacos. Use your favorite tortilla. Start with the cilantro lime slaw. Then, add the shrimp, tomato, and avocado next, and top everything with the bang bang sauce. Try some Refried Back Beans on the side. Serve and enjoy.
Keeping this meal low carb, keto friendly, and grain free mostly depends on your tortilla choice. You can also skip the tortilla and make a taco salad instead.
